Bold Boy, the enigmatic brain-child of Mike Paterson and Nathan Merrimen, is breaking the restraints on inner frustrations and hopes their latest single, “Reactions,” lays down a relatable foundation that tackles the question, “Does true freedom lie in not caring how we are perceived?”
While describing “Reactions,” the group shares that it’s “a song about frustration. But more importantly, about breaking free from that frustration. I believe that “Reactions” is a gateway into the “sound” of Bold Boy. The sound that we’ve been trying to discover since we started. Bombastic, yet sensitive. Familiar, but something new.”
So, does “Reactions” manage to succeed where Bold Boy hopes it will? Let’s find out.
“Reactions” is an entire vibe. From start to finish, I found myself getting lost in the muffled chaos resonating throughout my senses, losing myself to the gripping melodies as they zipped by, accompanied by the cascading flurry of the guitar, each hit of the drum doubling my heartbeat and keeping me feeling energized and ready for anything.
There is no point throughout the 3-minute runtime where I wasn’t in “go mode.” Bold Boy manages to get my blood pumping the same way pre-workout gets me ready for the gym. The track is intense, messy, and just the pure joy of two musicians who absolutely love what they do. A full force car crash in the most elegant of conclusions.
“Reactions” is one of those songs that needs to be felt in the confines of a small, almost rundown concert hall, a welcoming force of nature to lift one’s spirits and let loose in the most basic of ways. Lyrically, “Reactions” gets the job done as I found myself singing along while one-man dancing in my office chair, just completely losing all sense of the BS floating throughout the universe.
Bold Boy’s “Reactions” is the perfect track for the times we’re in right now, breaking down social walls within oneself to actually see the messy painting of our souls wheteher or not that freedom lies within not caring about others’ words or the words your mind lies about directly in your face.
The work Bold Boy does in this track is phenomenal and hopefully sets the scene for whatever they have planned next. But for now, let’s get our chaotic dance on.
Bold Boy’s new single, “Reactions,” can currently be streamed across your streaming platform of choice alongside their prior releases, “Sequences” and “Milk & Honey.”
